2Mah Update:

Language Arts: List 18 spelling test/Wonderful Words

• My House Tour Expository writing: Students worked hard finishing their good copies.

• Read, 'Who Will Be The Ruler? (folktale) - Students completed a sequencing activity.

***No spelling words this week as it is a short week.***

Math: Adding 2 digit numbers using different strategies like recognizing patterns, using base ten blocks/diagrams and using tens.

• Quick math facts - adding 4's

Science:  Review of Boats and Buoyancy - assessment went home Friday - please sign  and return for next week.  Please return green science duotangs.

Social: Looking at the flags of Saskatchewan, Acadian flag and Nunavut.

• Looking at people who contributed to these 3 communities.

Health: Review of new food guide - students drew pictures of healthy foods they put in their pitas.

Religion: Easter story - discussion of Holy Week.

Computers: Students are practicing their typing skills using Dance Mat(Learning home row) 

• Raz kids and Zorbits practice.  Please make sure your child is also using these programs at home to help compliment their reading and math skills.

Gym: Students participated In - Line Skating this week.

Language Arts: List 17 practice/wonderful words/spelling test

• My House Tour expository writing - students are working on their good copies and drawing a picture of their 2 special places in and around their houses.
• Magnificent March scrapbook writing.

Math:  Additiona nd subtraction of  1 and 2 digit numbers - adding dimes to find money amounts up to 99cents. - adding groups of 10 to 1 and 2 digit numbers.

• Math facts - adding 4's

Science: Plasticine boat activity:  Students assembled materials so they will float, carry a load and be stable in water and then modified a watercraft to increase the load it will carry.

• Cargo ships - learning how they carry loads using compartments.
• Rescue Boats - students made boats used to carry a rescue message.
• Paddle boats - students made a paddle boat that can be propelled thought the water.  Learning about the best design appropriate for the task.

Social: Learning about People

Gym: New Unit - Jumping  - learning about various jumps and landing patterns.

Health: Food Impact/Byblos food presentation.  

Religion: Lent story/discussion/questions.

April 10th; Return home reading - Please make sure your child is reading daily and you are recording comments on the sheets provided.

Language Arts: List 16 practice/wonderful words/spelling test

• House Tour Expository Writing- Body - students worked on the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs using descriptive words to describe 2 of the special places in their houses.

Math: Review of numbers unit - tests went home - please sign/return after the break.

Science: Floating Sinkers activity: The students were challenged to alter or add to a non-floating object(rock and ball of Plasticine) so that it will float.

Social: Looking at People in Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit - culture and flags.

Religion: Students finished up crosses with Lent promises.  Learning about forgiveness.

Health: Volcano activity - recognizing when we interrupt and what strategies can we use to prevent interrupting others.

Gym: Finished basketball unit.

Art: Learning about painting in the style of Ted Harrison.

Language Arts: Daily Five/Literacy Centres

• Expository writing - The House Tour - writing an introduction and conclusion using topic sentences and including 2 main ideas.  Learning how to use a question to grab the readers attention.  Started on the main event - the body paragraphs.  Students are writing about 2 of their favorite places in their house.

Math: Adding 1 and 2 more/subtracting 1 and 2 less.  Students practiced using different strategies when adding and subtracting.

Numbers assessment on Thursday, March 21st.  (See study guide that went home Friday.)

Social: Looking at the people of Meteghan/Saskatoon and Iqaluit

Art: Leprechaun hand-print art/students decorated our door Leprechaun style.  Students built leprechaun traps with their grade 6 buddies.  We will see Monday if we are lucky enough to catch a leprechaun.

Religion:  Lent promises

Gym: Basketball skills and drills practice/learning about team work.

Health: Read, 'My Mouth is a Volcano'

Learning about taking a deep breath and thinking before we blurt/interrupt.

Language Arts: List 15 spelling practice/Daily 5 Literacy Centres

• Expository writing - Forming and writing opinions/sentence analysis of fairy sentences - nouns/verbs/capitalization and punctuation.

***No spelling words this week as it is a short week.***

Math: Daily fact practice - adding 2's and 3's.

• Comparing numbers using subtraction sentences.  Using math language: 4 more /difference

Science:  Sinking Floaters activity - students constructed floating structures and added weight(pennies) to make them sink.  Learning about water displacement due to added mass.

Social: Come travel with us!  Students presented travel brochures.

Religion: BFG(big family groups) - Shrove Tuesday/Lent/Selfishness - students thought about what they could give up or improve on for Lent. Students had pancakes in the gym for Shrove Tuesday.

Gym: Basketball

***Students will be building Leprechaun traps on Wednesday this week.  There will be a few basic supplies in class (paper, stickers tissue paper,tape)  Please see sheet going home tomorrow about some suggestions for students to bring in by Wednesday(ie/box, shiny things, anything green, toliet paper roles etc...***  Feel free to search the computer with your child to get ideas.  We will be building them with our 6E buddies.***

• Learning about Expository Writing - writing to inform.  We looked at 2 samples of writing describing different kinds of houses and learned why one piece was better than the other.  Learning about: Paragraphs to separate our main ideas/introductions and topic sentences/conclusions.
