Language Arts: List 13 practice/spelling test/Daily 5 Literacy Centres

• Chinese New Year - story/facts/video/journal writing/response questions - students enjoyed some rice and dumplings and received a red Chinese envelope with lucky money inside.  It is the year of the pig!

Math: Fact Families/Order of numbers in addition(Learning that the order of the numbers does not matter in addition because you get the same answer)/ missing parts in an addition sentence.

ex/  4  +  ___  =   12

• Math fact daily practice - adding 0 and 1 to numbers.

Science: New Unit - Boats and Buoyancy 

Social: Creating a travel brochure of Iqaluit/Meteghan or Saskatoon - interesting facts/activities to do or see and pictures that are unique to one of the 3 areas we have studied.

Health: Learning about the new Canada food guide(More plant based foods and less dairy)and how physical activity is connected to our well being.

Gym: Basketball - passing/dribbling/scrimmaging.

Language Arts: Daily Five: Students are now participating in all 5 centres.

Centre 1: ABC book - All about me book - students write sentences using descriptive words about themselves using a different letter from the alphabet.

Centre 2: Reading to Self - students pick a book at their level and read/complete a book review.

Centre 3: Writing Centre - Students use sentence starters/vocabulary to write a narrative, expository or a journal response.

Centre 4: Listen to Reading - Students listen to a story on Bookflix and complete a review including new words heard, characters and draw an illustration.

Centre 5: Word Work: Students choose a task to complete using our spelling word lists.  Trace words, rainbow words, highlight, doodle words, unscramble...

During the Daily Five small groups of students will work with me with on guided reading and different reading strategies.

100th Day was on Wednesday, Feb 13th:  Students participated in 5 centres throughout the afternoon celebrating 100 days of learning.

Build a structure with 100 cups.
100 piece puzzle challenge.
100 year old self - art
100 year old writing prompt.
100 Day snack.

Language Arts:  List 12 practice/wonderful words/spelling test.

**There will be no spelling words this week as it is a short week. ***

• Jazzy January scrapbook writing.
• Journal writing about Storybook Theater.

Math:   Numbers - equality and inequality/signs in our world.

Social:  Early Days of Meteghan.

Science: Magnet test  - please sign and return if not already.

Religion: Learning about the parts of the mass.

Art: Polar bears of Iqaluit - using different media with natural forms.

Computers: Raz kids and Zorbits practice.  These are programs purchased by the school to support math and language arts.  Students should practice at home as well.  

Storybook Theater Lion King production:  Students have worked hard for the past 2 weeks and put on a great performance at St. Mary's Church on Thursday.

Great job grade 2's!

Math: Numbers - addition and subtraction stories - learning about math language ex/ How many altogether?  sum vs difference
Science: Learning about a magnetic field with iron filings.  A magnetic field is invisible so we can use iron filings to observe if they attract (north and south) or repel(north and north)

• How to make a compass activity.  Once we magnetize the pin(we rubbed it in one direction with a bar magnet) it should point magnetic north.

Magnet test - Wed, Feb 6th - see study guide that went home.  Please return green science duotangs on Wednesday.
Religion: Learning about the mass.

Lion King Storybook residency:  Students have been participating all week by singing, dancing and acting.  Performance on Thursday @ St. Mary's @ 6:30pm.
